School Rules

School Visitation Policy

Parents are welcome to visit the classrooms and observe the class in session upon request to the clergy or the Principal.

School Hours

Students should arrive no sooner than 4:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and they should be picked up promptly at dismissal time, 6:30 p.m. Teachers will only remain on the premises until 6:45 p.m., unless notified of an emergency. Only kids who need to remain for later events (basketball, dance, etc.) may remain within the building. All others (including younger siblings) MUST be picked up.

Attendance

We urge you to encourage promptness and regular attendance. Recognition will be given for perfect attendance.

Parents are required to report in writing the exact reason for each case of absence or tardiness. It is not enough to say “please excuse Johnny for his absence,” because it does not tell us the reason for his/her not attending school. Parents are asked to refrain from making the request for a child to be excused unless it is absolutely necessary. Insofar as possible, any medical, dental and other appointments should be made out of school hours.

Also, extra-curricular activities should not interfere with school attendance. As per the decision of the Board of Education, a student CANNOT be promoted unless he/she can pass a proficiency exam for that grade level if he/she has more than twelve (12) absences during the school year.

If for any reasons classes will not be held you will be notified by the One Call Now automated system. Fr. Jim Doukas will make the final decide on cancellation during inclement weather conditions, regardless of public school closings.

Special Attendance Policy

Students are require to attend Vespers Services for Saint Demetrios Feast Day, Thu., October 23 at 6 p.m., and the Sunday Divine Liturgy on Greek Letters Day. Failure to attend these church services will result in a marked absence.

Discipline Policy

No electronic games, cell phones, I-pods, CD players, etc. are permitted in class. Any such items will be taken away until a parent comes in to collect it. Disruptive or inappropriate behavior will be dealt with in the following manner:

  • 1 st Occurrence- Warning from the teacher
  • 2 nd Occurrence- After-school conference with the teacher
  • 3 rd Occurrence- Referral to the Principal and parent conference
  • 4 th Occurrence- Conference with parents, child, teacher and priest

Parents will have to pay for any damage to the grounds (St. Philothei chapel, bathrooms, classrooms, hallways or the Zapis Activity Center) that may be caused by their child(ren).

Appropriate Attire

Please send children to school dressed appropriately. Be aware of skirt lengths, revealing clothing or clothing with profanity or obscene gestures. No hats (baseball caps, etc.) may be worn in the classrooms. Heeleys (roller-blade shoes) are NOT permitted anywhere on the church, classroom, hall or Zapis Activity Center premises. If anyone is found wearing these shoes, they will be removed.

Safety

Children are to refrain from jostling, running and shouting in the halls. You are kindly requested to park your vehicle and pick up your child(ren) from the entrance on the northeast side of the lower Narthex (by the school office.) Please note that the entrance to the Zapis Activity Center will NO LONGER be accessible during Greek School hours.

  • PLEASE COME PROMPTLY AT 6:30 P.M.
  • PLEASE BE CAUTIOUS WHEN LEAVING THE BUILDING!
  • PLEASE OBSERVE THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT

Costumes

The school has a number of costumes to loan its students to participate in the programs. However, the parents are RESPONSIBLE for the cleaning and proper care and RETURN of the costumes.

Greek for Credit

Westlake , Lakewood, and North Olmsted High Schools will award one full credit to students who graduate from Greek School. We are presently working with other area schools for a similar recognition.

Also available is a Standardized Greek Language Proficiency test created and administered by the Greek Ministry of Education for college credit. This test is offered once a year in New York City, NY or Pittsburgh, PA, to students who have graduated from Greek School and are well-versed in the Greek language. If they pass, students are eligible to earn college credit toward their Foreign Language requirement.
